Fear of Failure
Fear of failure is a common emotional experience in life. It happens to everyone, but it is more often seen in beginners. This fear can limit personal growth, creativity, and achievement. It usually comes from self-doubt, anxiety, and overthinking about the outcome. Emotional intelligence plays an important role in overcoming the fear of failure.
Fear of failure is a thought pattern that focuses on the possibility of a negative outcome in any situation. It often arises from overthinking mistakes, which may lead to feelings of judgment, rejection, or personal loss. This fear is commonly found in people with low self-esteem or those who have had negative past experiences.
The framework of emotional intelligence can be used to manage and reduce this emotional challenge. For example, the models developed by Goleman and Mayer provide guidance on building self-awareness and improving relationship management skills.
Example: A student avoids sharing their article in class because they fear making mistakes and being judged by classmates. By applying the emotional intelligence model, the student can develop self-awareness and strengthen social skills, which helps them overcome the fear of failure.

BRANCH 01
Perceiving, appraising and expressing emotions |
I feel anxious because I fear getting negative reviews, that fellow members might laugh, and that they may develop a negative perception about me. |
BRANCH 02 Using emotions to facilitate thought |
I understand that if I don’t share my article in class, I will miss the chance to recognize my areas of improvement. My courage will remain limited, and I won’t be able to empathize with other students who may also be struggling. This could lead me to live with false confidence and an egocentric mindset.

BRANCH 03
Understanding and reasoning with emotions |
I feel the fear of failure because I overthink about the future and focus too much on possible negative outcomes.
It happens because I might have prepared the article in a rush, or I am still new to these things. I may be experiencing too many emotions at once—such as anxiety, worry, intimidation, and vulnerability—which creates fear within me. |
BRANCH 04 |
Fear of failure is a normal part of life that happens to everyone, but I need to overcome this feeling in order to build my courage and improve myself.
I should accept this fear as a challenge to grow and learn. |
