Why you can’t write - Part 1/2
Socrates famously said, “Understanding the question is half the answer." Being aware of your emotions is the first step of the Goleman Model which teaches us how to regulate and channel our emotions. So your crucial first step is self-awareness of the actual problem.
Recently my classmates bravely faced their fears and problems which stopped them from writing articles and they allowed me to learn and recognise these symptoms in myself.
Being “not good enough” was a well-used excuse. My writing is not good enough compared with other people’s writings. A pertinent question is ‘Good enough for who?’
This problem assumes that the result is in our hands when clearly Allah SWT has ownership of the fruits of our labor. Psychologically, it is a serotonin issue where our intention and focus shifts from pleasing Allah SWT through our actions to worrying about what people will say about us. Our serotonin is misaligned to a billion people rather than the only one we need to please.
Another ghost which accompanies me in my educational endeavours is “Mistake”. Being afraid of making mistakes to the extent of being paralysed with fear, I wonder who benefits from this state of a believer? The shaytan or the ummah? The bravest people we know are those who learnt from their mistakes. So make mistakes proudly and congratulate yourself for learning something new through the experience.
There are many other reasons why we struggle with writing which we'll cover in the next article.
