Why you can't write - Part 2/2
This article continues from our previous article where we looked at the psychology behind why we struggle with writing if we feel we're not good enough or we will make a mistake. Here we continue to look at three more common reasons.
“Praise” is another addictive dopamine hit which we seem fuelled by; will only a praise-led initiative be successful or one that is correct but ridiculed everywhere? It’s again a serotonin alignment issue where the praise or feedback from people seems heavier on our scales compared to reliance on Allah and our own judgement. Maybe you seek to be placed higher on the competency hierarchy through receiving admiration from people. This again is a comparison problem where your actions are judged against people rather than self-development.
“Fear” is also a familiar companion on my journey. Its far-reaching dark tendrils twine around my cognition and block my reason and creativity, the two divine gifts bestowed upon mankind. Moreover, it snatches away our free-will as we stay stuck in a loop of increasingly worrying scenarios of future doom and gloom.
“Lethargy” is an insidious whisperer. An in-built nature of humans, this also resides within me. This stops me from the first 10 minutes of my task, breaks my resolve and tempts me deeper into layers of comforts and delights. All until I forget I was distracted and regret losing precious time.
When we write we fight multiple enemies within ourselves. Maybe you resonate with the reasons detailed here or maybe something else stops you taking the first step. The most important question is do you know exactly what is stopping you? If yes, then we must congratulate ourselves as we have achieved the first step of self-awareness and continue striving forwards.
