THE JEFFREY EPSTEIN HORMONE
There is no hidden hormone but Dopamine that makes a person cross every boundary till morality becomes relative, easily twisted to fit one’s own definitions of evil and good.
Dopamine is the signal of pursuit which pushes towards what is next. The more a behavior is indulged, the more the brain adapts. What once felt sufficient becomes ordinary and now greater intensity of novelty is required to produce the same level of satisfaction. Thus the threshold rises.
The limit keeps expanding with each indulgence.
At the same time, the ability to pause, to weigh consequences, to recognize harm, it is very easily overridden. Justifications of one’s acts to satisfy this escalated threshold come easier. Take Jeffrey Epstein and co. for example and the mechanism of action of this hormone gets clearer.
The teaching of RasoolAllah ﷺ, “if the son of Adam were given a valley of wealth, he would desire another and nothing would fill his mouth except dust”, isn’t mere metaphor. It is a reflection of the reality of the human drive that the appetite does not settle until death comes to take away and nothing is left except the dust that falls on one’s face.
When desire is repeatedly fed, the system adapts in a way that demands more while giving only what is sure to give back. What begins as pursuit becomes compulsion and then there’s no boundaries till one finds oneself at the devil’s door, knocking to join the club which feeds on human flesh and pleasures itself in the misery of the innocent in the most cruelest of ways unimaginable.
Dopamine does not generate moral intent but its adaptive properties produce escalating compulsive patterns when behavior is repeatedly reinforced without constraint.
The antidote to this is awareness, recognition and regulation of said hormone and the ability to be able to sit with the discomfort of wanting more and not feeding into it. To fast not just with food and drinks but with eyes, ears, tongue and words is when one can save oneself from becoming potential epstein in this island that is the world.
