In Islam, the concept of Tawheed (the oneness of Allah) is not limited to personal worship. It is the foundation upon which every aspect of life is built, including the governance of society. Tawheed means that Allah is the only Creator, Sustainer, and Ruler of everything and Just as we worship Allah alone in our prayers, we must also submit to His laws in all areas of life, including governance, we must also submit to His authority in how we live and organize our societies.
Governance Under Allah’s Authority
Allah has provided clear guidance in the Quran on how human societies should be governed. In an Islamic system, His laws are supreme, and no human-made laws and system can be placed above them. Any form of governance that implements laws other than what Allah has revealed is, in essence, an act of Taghut, a rebellion against Tawheed. By adopting man-made laws, we elevate human whims, desires, and limited understanding above the timeless and perfect commandments of Allah. This is not just a deviation from Islamic principles but a serious violation of our core belief in Allah’s absolute oneness and sovereignty.
The Violation of Tawheed through Man-Made Laws
When we accept man-made laws in place of what Allah has revealed, it is a subtle form of shirk, even if we don’t intend it. This is because it challenges Allah’s exclusive right to legislate and rule over His creation.
Who knows better how to manage the affairs of this world? us, the limited human beings, or the One who created everything? The One who brought the entire universe into existence, does He not know best how it should function? Obviously, Allah, who is the Creator and Master of everything, knows better than us. Therefore, we must govern our society and country according to His guidance. The laws that Allah has revealed are perfect, and it is our duty to implement them, instead of following flawed, man-made laws that are based on limited human understanding. Only by living under Allah’s laws can we ensure justice, balance, and harmony in the world. Anything else leads to oppression, corruption, and imbalance in society.
The Central Role of Tawheed in Islamic Governance
Tawheed is not just about worship; it encompasses every part of a Muslim’s life, including governance. For a Muslim, accepting any law other than Allah’s is not merely a political error, rather it is a violation of the core belief in the oneness of Allah. Establishing an Islamic system of governance is, therefore, a natural extension of Tawheed. It is an affirmation that Allah alone has the right to legislate and that no authority should be obeyed above Him.
Conclusion
In Conclusion, the concept of Tawheed (the oneness of Allah) is crucial for every aspect of a Muslim's life, especially in governance. Allah's laws must be the highest authority, as they guide how we should live and organize our societies. Simply stating "La ilaha illallah" (there is no god but Allah) is not enough; true belief in Tawheed requires us to actively follow Allah's guidance in our actions and decisions. We must avoid any laws or systems that contradict His teachings. By doing this, we honor our belief in Allah’s oneness and ensure justice and harmony in our communities.
