Humanity and morality are among the most discussed concepts in philosophy, religion, and culture. Yet, their definitions and relationship remain contested. The Qur’an and Sunnah, however, offer clarity: humanity (insaaniyat) is our natural disposition, while morality (akhlaqiyat) is its completion. Humanity is the soil; morality is the fruit. One without the other is incomplete.
Humanity in the Qur’anic Lens
The Qur’an dignifies humankind: “We have certainly honored the children of Adam…” (Al-Isra 17:70). The very word insaan comes from two roots:
The Prophet ﷺ affirmed this by teaching that “Allah’s hand is with the Jama‘ah (community).” Thus, humanity is tied to connection, mercy, and social responsibility.
Morality: Humanity’s Fulfillment
Morality (akhlaq) is not merely empathy or sentiment; it is action guided by divine instruction. Allah commands:
“Indeed, Allah commands justice, excellence, and giving to relatives, and forbids immorality, bad conduct, and oppression.” (An-Nahl 16:90).
The Prophet ﷺ declared: “I was sent only to perfect good character.”
The attributes of morality include: truthfulness, justice, mercy, trustworthiness, courage, patience, gratitude, humility, and modesty. Surah Jumu‘ah (62:2) outlines the divine program for cultivating morality through four steps:
This holistic framework elevates humanity into moral excellence.
Causes of Decline
History and modern times alike show the erosion of humanity and morality.
Among Muslims:
Globally:
When morality is lost, humanity becomes hollow; when humanity declines, morality has no ground to grow.
Reviving Humanity and Morality
The Qur’an and Sunnah provide timeless guidance for renewal.
Conclusion
Humanity and morality are inseparable. Rahmah and insaaf form the essence of humanity, while morality perfects and elevates that essence. The Qur’an and Sunnah anchor us in timeless values when the world treats morality as a shifting trend. By returning to our fitrah, reviving divine guidance, and cultivating compassion and justice, we can restore what is lost.
As the Prophet ﷺ reminded us: “The most beloved of people to Allah are those most beneficial to humanity.” True humanity flourishes only when rooted in morality, and true morality endures only when guided by revelation.
