Today, let's understand Postmodernism in simple words.
First of all, a question arises: Is the reality we are living in becoming more of a simulation than something real? In this world, media images, consumer brands, and advertisements often feel more real than our everyday actual lives.
Or why are we still trapped in those big narratives of progress in science and reason even though our history has clearly shown us that these very things have led to wars and oppression?
To answer these questions, it is very important to understand postmodernism. So, to understand postmodernism, let’s first take a brief review of what pre-modernism and modernism were and then move on to postmodernism.
The Pre-Modernism period was the time before the Age of Reason or the Enlightenment. It was a time when people slowly started shifting focus from blind belief to reason. They began asking, "What is the reason and logic behind everything?"
The Modernism period gave great importance to reason. Along with that, cultural trends also started changing. This era is also called the Age of Reason.
Now let’s come to Postmodernism. The Postmodern era began in the mid-20th century. The basic concept of postmodernism is to reject old ways of thinking and old ideas and instead explore multiple new ideas. It involves creating fresh thoughts and challenging old traditions and old methods. In fact, new ideas and reflective thinking started emerging in postmodernism.
Postmodernism was mainly a sociological theory and an intellectual movement. At its core, it was a refusal to accept that any system or theory is universal. It challenges all social norms. The thinkers of this period argue that no truth is absolute or universal.
That is why, instead of absolute truth, postmodernism promotes discourse and debate. It questions the traditional ways of gaining knowledge and adopts new approaches. It also says that what was earlier considered absolute truth actually has many dimensions, and we can understand that truth in multiple ways.
If we summarize Postmodernism, it mainly includes two things:
1. Rejection of the Grand Narratives that were popular at that time.
2. A shift in focus towards individualism and subjectivity.
Besides this, the lines between high culture and popular culture started to blur. People began mixing and matching them to create new hybrid forms of culture.
