In surah Maryam, Allah says, And mention in the Book, Ibrahim. Indeed, he was a man of truth and a prophet.
When he said to his father, “O my father, why do you worship that which neither hears nor sees nor benefits you at all?”
“O my father, knowledge has come to me which has not come to you, so follow me; I will guide you to a straight path.”
“O my father, I fear that a punishment from the Most Merciful may touch you.”
In this ayah, we observe Ibrahim a.s displaying social awareness, as he understands his father's feelings may get offended by his message, and therefore uses well curated, empathetic words to convey it. But when his father finally responds, we see Ibrahim displaying self awareness.
Further in the same surah, his father says, (Maryam, 19:46)
He said, “Do you reject my gods, O Ibrahim? If you do not stop, I will stone you. Leave me for a long time.”
At this point, his father has finally and absolutely rejected him and shunned him off from his home land.
There is a study called Like Father, Like Son: Empirical insights into the intergenerational continuity of Masculinity Ideology. (2023). In this study, it is shown that sons tend to idealise their fathers and learn from their behaviour when it comes to ideas of masculinity and religiosity. They tend to grow up into the same ideas as we're displayed by their father's, in fact, they feel pressured to do so. This pressure could be real as well as imagined.
The bottom line is that it is a matter of intense emotional difficulty for sons to grow on a path that entirely differs from their fathers’.
So when Ibrahim questions everything his father has ever believed in or stood up for, it was a matter of utmost courage and was preceded by a state of excessive self awareness.
Therefore Ibrahim responds by saying, “Peace be upon you. I will ask forgiveness for you from my Lord. Indeed, He has always been gracious to me.”
And I go away from you and what you invoke besides Allah. And I shall invoke my Lord. Hopefully I shall not be a loser by invoking my Lord.”
He did not succumb to the emotional pressure brought on him by his father. He was already connected to his Lord and had formed an opinion independent of his father. Here he displayed the Aware self awareness type.
