Modernism is an elusive term in the sense that there are many variations in its meaning. To put it simply, modernism is an intellectual, artistic, and cultural movement that changed how people think and understand the world. The core idea of modernism was to break away from tradition and create something new. The old ways were not enough to explain the world.
It's almost impossible to identify the exact origin of modernism, but we can say that it began in the 18th century. Modernism didn't emerge randomly, but it was a reaction to the absolute authority of the Church, scientific developments, the Industrial Revolution, and World war 1. Karl Marx, Charles Darwin, Friedrich Nietzsche, Sigmund Freud, and other thinkers played their part in the movement and spread of modernism.
Modernism proposed that truth is not absolute and human perception is limited. It rejected the blind following of the past and focused on reason, individual autonomy, and scientific development. Modernism views religion as a subjective personal experience rather than an absolute truth or authority. It is believed that humans can discover the truth and meaning by reason and science without divine guidance.
