The Cliche of Propaganda as Purely Negative
Judging by definition, propaganda is totally a legitimate form of human activity. If someone has valuable truth, its not a privilege but duty to spread the truth, having an organized effort and using best means. Propaganda becomes evil and blameworthy, when its authors consciously spread what they know to be lie and when they aim on effects which are damaging to common good.
When we study Seerah we encounter both kinds of propagandists. During early-middle stage of Makkan period, non-believers were creating a narrative of Mohammad SAW is a sorcerer, Abu lahab used to follow Muhammad SAW and tell people that he’s a liar, don’t believe him (Life of Muhammad by Anwar al Awlaki).
We can see dialogues of Abu Bakar RA in Al-Hākim and Al-Bayhaqī how he was using his knowledge of genealogy to find head or most influential persons of different tribes during Hajj season. Musab bin Umair RA in Madina was told to talk carefully with heads of Aws and Khazraj, because whole tribes will follow them(Naqoush e Sahaba RA)
