SMDA & IT'S GLOBAL IMPACT
On September 17, 2025, Pakistan and Saudi Arabia, signed a Strategic Mutual Defense Agreement SMDA. The signing came less than ten days after Israelʼs September 9 attack on Qatarʼs capital, Doha, striking diplomatic and civilian facilities and killing six people, including a Qatari security official. This agreement strengthens defense cooperation, The joint statement states that “any aggression against one country shall be considered an aggression against bothˮ.
This is not the first time for a defence agreement to take place between these two parties. Starting in the late 1960s, Pakistan began training Saudi military personnel (pilots, air force, army) and sending advisory support. Pakistani officers served in training/advisory roles; Saudis were trained in Pakistan.
Saudi Arabia, like other Gulf states, has increasingly been exposed to Israelʼs series of aggressions against the neighboring countries. Regional instability— exemplified by Israelʼs recent attack on Qatar—has further underlined the need for a credible security partner which is globally acceptable.
The Saudi–Pakistan Defense Agreement brings tangible benefits for both partners, strengthening their security, economic, and diplomatic positions.
-Beyond defense, the agreement carries important ecoomnic and geopolitical significance as a byproduct. Pakistan gains sustained access to energy and financial support, critical for stabilizing its economy and ensuring long-term resilience.
-Military alliances have often boosted economic integration, industrial cooperation, and technological advancement.
-It also sets the groundwork for a broader collective security framework for the Gulf and wider Islamic world.
-It recognizes Pakistanʼs nuclear capability and military professionalism as core assets for regional security, making it a credible deterrent against Indian aggression for Pakistan and Israeli adventurism against Arabs States.
-This pact enhances Pakistanʼs diplomatic bargaining power, allowing it to project influence not just in the Gulf but also across the broader Islamic world.
-This pact ensures that Saudi Arabia does not face external threats alone, particularly during a period marked by Israeli aggression in Gaza, Iran, Qatar, Yemen, Lebanon, Syria, Tunisia, and more, highlighting Israel's emergence as a regional 'thug' in its quest for a 'Greater Israelʼ.
A Shock to the Global Security Mindset - By signing a mutual defence pact with Pakistan — a nuclear power outside the Western alliance system - Saudi Arabia psychologically signals to the world that it no longer relies solely on Washington for its safety.
India perceives that its long-held assumption — that Saudi Arabia is a neutral economic partner. This psychological shift prompts a “prepare for worst-caseˮ mentality within Indiaʼs defence and diplomatic circles.
In the Muslim world, especially among the public, the psychological effect is pride and empowerment: for many, it symbolizes a form of strategic sovereignty after decades of dependence on Western protection. The pact has a moral and emotional impact: two large Muslim-majority countries, historically bonded through faith and pilgrimage ties, are now openly aligned in defence.
Pakistan and Saudi Arabia reinforce their shared vision of promoting stability, countering terrorism, and contributing positively to the international order Saudi Arabia, with its unmatched financial power and influence across the Arab and Islamic world, combined with Pakistanʼs military strength and credibility, creates a powerful security bloc.
