Have you ever noticed how emotionally damaged people can harm the environment around them? Emotional Intelligence (EI) is the ability to sense, understand, and manage emotions. People with low EI often fail to express their feelings appropriately or recognize others’ emotions, which weakens relationships and creates tension. Communication and empathy are vital for harmony, yet emotionally damaged individuals may overreact, withdraw, or spread negativity that drains others’ energy. As Bradberry and Greaves state, “People with low emotional intelligence live reactive lives. They allow emotions to control them, rather than using emotions to guide them.” Similarly, Bar-On explains, “Deficiencies in emotional intelligence can lead to problems in dealing with stress, frustration, and relationships with others.”
Although low EI might sometimes appear to have positive effects—like directness or decisiveness—such outcomes are short-lived and emotionally exhausting. Some relationships may survive without EI through duty or shared goals, but they lack warmth and genuine connection. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ’s response at Ta’if shows that true emotional intelligence—patience and empathy—can turn hostility into peace and create a nurturing environment.
