Do you know that hiding your true emotions and trying to control the moment or situation is a silent killer of your mind, your body, and your relationships?
It’s just like putting a lid on a boiling pot. For a while, it may seem like a solution, but the pressure building inside your mind will eventually explode—causing long-lasting damage.
This technique may seem effective for a short period of time, but in the long run, suppressing emotions invites serious issues that harm us on a psychological, social, and physical level.
Let’s take a look at why the journey from emotional suppression to emotional expression is necessary and how we can make it happen.
The reason is simple: when we suppress our emotions and fail to express them in the way they should be expressed in that moment or situation, it affects not only our own body but also our relationships and the people around us. We may feel as though we are handling situations very well, but in reality, we end up paying the price with our health and our relationships.
Because of the emotions we habitually suppress—whether out of politeness or fear—we often fall into depression and anxiety (Zhou et al., 2022, Current Psychology). Socially, the cost we pay is that our relationships become weak (Chervonsky & Hunt, 2017, Emotion). We lose the ability to make sound decisions and struggle to handle other important matters in life effectively. Along with this, our empathy also decreases. Mentally and psychologically, suppression weakens our immune system, increases cortisol levels in our body, and leaves us more vulnerable to illness.
This is why expressing emotions is more important than suppressing them. Expression helps regulate our emotions, which reduces stress, depression, and anxiety (Roemer et al., 2015, Behaviour Research and Therapy). Our relationships become stronger, our performance in daily life improves, and our inner resilience grows.
So how can we gain all these benefits? The answer is through awareness. When we become self-aware and recognize the state of our emotions without being judgmental, our journey from suppression to expression begins. Because the first step toward any change is acceptance. Once we accept, the next steps—awareness and mindfulness—naturally follow.
Now the question is, why is this so important?
The answer is: for both our survival and our quality of life, we must move from suppression to expression.
And how can it happen? By practicing techniques that support our mental recovery, enhance emotional awareness, and help us express our emotions in healthier ways in daily life.
The journey toward emotional expression begins with meditation, journaling, or therapy—without judging ourselves or holding on to self-criticism.
Here are some practical tips that can help us apply these techniques:
Engage in expressive writing about your emotions as part of your daily routine.
Labeling emotions correctly instead of just passing general comments about your inner feeling to become self-aware.
Incorporate purposeful activities into your daily life that support mindfulness, self-awareness, and healthy emotional expression.
