What is Fitrah
The concept of fitrah is one of the most commonly used, yet least understood, concepts. This is one of the main concepts and terms I use in my articles, so this piece is written to define it.
Fitrah is a Arabic word meaning "original disposition". it refers to the innate and natural disposition that is present in every human. It includes core concepts that are, in a sense, hardwired into the mind—such as an inclination toward truth and goodness, and a natural aversion to evil. Beyond these, it also encompasses certain tendencies often observed in human nature, such as a man’s desire for power, status, and courage, and a woman’s inclination toward beauty and appreciation.
Everyone is born with a pure, uncorrupted nature that is inclined towards Allah(SWT) and moral goodness a kind of blank state. Sins and false beliefs come from ones environment and upbringing which corrupt this natural disposition. Due to this natural inclination every human has the same potential for belief. This concept also emphasizes that Islam is not something unnatural but rather a return to the original state of a human.
Rejecting fitrah (the innate moral compass) often stems from misunderstanding, flawed reasoning, or ignorance. Denying this natural disposition ultimately leads to a distortion of morality itself. Grounding morality purely in social consensus makes it subjective and unstable, whereas the concept of fitrah offers a more objective and inherent foundation for moral truth.
There are some people who do not follow the fitrah. Those who act in ways that go against its inherent principles. Such individuals have used theri free will in destructive ways. However, fitrah is never completely destroyed it is only masked and buried.
Summary
Fitrah is the natural an basic disposition of the mind that provides an inner moral compass that helps individuals distinguish between right and wrong.
Every child is born upon Fitrah, then his parents make him a Jew, a Christian, or a Magian
Fitrah is never destroyed but rather masked and buried
