Summary
Surah number: 68
Total ayat: 52
Revealed: In Makkah shortly after Surah Al-Alaq
The Surah opens by swearing by the "Pen" and what is written, highlighting the importance of knowledge and recording (Ayat-1).
Allah affirms that The Prophet (PBUH) is not mad and possesses a magnificent character promising a never ending reward (Ayat 2-4).
Allah mentions the Mukazibin (the deniers, disbelievers or liers) who rejects the message of Allah. Allah prohibits The Prophet (PBUH) to not give in nor compromise with them. Allah describes the Mukazibin as (Ayat 8-13):
1. Despicable
2. Vain oath-takers
3. Slanderer
4. Gossip-mongers
5. Withholder of good
6. Transgressors
7. Evil doers
8. Brute
Allah further mentions an illegimate child, (Walid bin Mughira), who was known for his bad character and lack of noble roots therefore highlighting his psychological and moral degradation, arrogance due to abundance of wealth and large supportive family which lead him to believe he was superior to others. Allah promises to mark or brand such people that Allah's disgrace will be visible to all (Ayat 13-16).
Allah mentions the "Owners of the Garden", their arrogance and stinginess. They had inherited a fertile garden from their father, who used to share the harvest with the poor. The sons driven by greed decided to break this tradition, keeping all fruits to themselves. A devastating fire, from Allah, destroyed the garden completely. They realized their foolishness and acknowledged their wrong-going, suffering from extreme remorse (Ayat 17-32).
Allah mentions that this is how He punishes in this world, but the punishment of the Hereafter is far worse, "If only they (the people) knew". (Ayat 33-34).
Allah challenges the logic of the disbelievers, questioning them if they have a divine scripture or a promise for their claims hence asking them to produce evidence for their false beliefs. Allah warns them to 'Beware of the Day the Shin of Allah will be bared (exposed)' (Ayat 42). The wicked covered in humiliation will be unable to prostrate as they had neglected their prayers in this world, (the Dunia). Hence Allah will draw them to destruction in ways, they cannot comprehend (Ayat 35-47).
Allah further mentions Prophet Yunus (AS) as a reminder to not rush to judgement or despair and to be patient (Ayat 48-50).
The concluding verses of the surah are widely know as the "Verses of the Evil Eye", recited for protection. Allah clarifies The Quran as a divine reminder for all of humanity (Ayat 51-52).
