Islam is often understood simply as a religion, but in reality, it provides complete guidance for life. It addresses every dimension of human existence—our personal behavior, family relationships, economic dealings, and even social and political responsibilities. The Qur’an offers comprehensive principles (ahkām), and the Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ demonstrates how to put those principles into practice.
One beautiful aspect of the Prophet’s ﷺ character is how he listened to others. It is reported in hadith that when someone spoke to him, he would turn his face fully toward that person and give them his complete attention. This shows a deep level of respect, presence, and sincerity in communication—qualities that are often missing in our interactions today.
Aisha bint Abi Bakr described the character of the Prophet ﷺ by saying that “his character was the Qur’an.” This means that he embodied its teachings completely—he didn’t act based on personal whims, but in accordance with divine guidance.
There is also a well-known teaching of the Prophet ﷺ (in meaning) that whoever turns away from his Sunnah is not truly following his path. This emphasizes the importance of not only believing in Islam but also striving to live according to the example he set.
In reflecting on how the Prophet ﷺ listened, we learn that even small actions—like giving someone full attention—can be acts of faith. Following the Sunnah is not limited to rituals; it includes our manners, our interactions, and the way we treat others in everyday life.
