The Science Behind the Gym
The science behind going to the gym is that when we work out and put our body through physical stress — for example, heavy weightlifting, fast running, or any intense physical activity for a long time — our muscles experience small tears. As a result of this strain, the muscle fibers break down slightly, which causes pain in the body.
To reduce this pain, our pituitary gland and hypothalamus in the brain release endorphins. Endorphins are hormones that numb the neurons so that the body doesn’t feel as much pain. The pain is still present, but endorphins mask it, creating a temporary sense of relief and pleasure. This phenomenon is known as the “endorphin rush” or “runner’s high.” We often feel this pleasant sensation after a workout. Our body is naturally designed to respond this way to intense physical activity.
In conclusion, after working out at the gym, our muscles develop small tears, and endorphins help reduce the sensation of pain by numbing the neurons. As a result, we feel a sense of pleasure instead of discomfort. This is the “athletic high” that only people who exercise regularly can experience.
Unfortunately, many people — especially women in Pakistan — lead sedentary lifestyles and believe that running or exercising is against their grace. This mindset often leads to various physical and mental health problems before the age of 40.
