The word “gossip” means “conversation or reports about other people's private lives that might be unkind, disapproving, or not true” (“GOSSIP | English meaning - Cambridge Dictionary”)
Gossip is not simply loose and careless talk, its neurological and psychological roots show that gossipers are addicted to it because one of hormones that is released as a result of gossip is the feel good hormone-Dopamine. “Gossip activates the brain’s reward system, releasing dopamine, the same neurotransmitter involved in pleasure and addiction. People feel a sense of excitement or satisfaction when sharing or hearing juicy information, reinforcing the habit”. More the sharing of information, more the dopamine released, over time making this a habit. (Malices)
Gossip is one of the signs of a diseased heart. Ibn al qayyim stated that A person's tongue can give you the taste of his heart. “Gossip about other people can feel rewarding. Psychologists call this social comparison theory—measuring where we stand by comparing ourselves to others” (Cooper). It is a sign of low self esteem that a person engages in talking about other people’s private lives.
In Arabic, gossip is called” نميمة”. Hazrat Hudhaifa (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "I heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) saying that a gossiper will not enter Paradise”. (Sahih muslim 105a)
On one instance Two graves came in the path of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ).He said: They were both being punished, and not for any major matter. One did not take care of the veil when urinating. The other was a gossiper (Jami` at-Tirmidhi 70).
Gossiper also suffers from the harms of gossip on his/her heart and mind. “Gossip provides pleasure but may also result in guilt, moral judgment concerns, and potential relationship damage if discovered.” (“Under the Surface of Gossip: A Psychological Exploration”).
Gossip can be super toxic. It's like spreading rumors and negativity that can totally ruin someone's reputation and relationships. Not only does it hurt the person being gossiped about, but it also affects the one spreading it. It's like a verbal poison that creates anxiety, isolation, and conflict. Plus, it erodes trust and makes relationships go downhill.
