I always find peace and deep relaxation whenever I listen to the recitation of the Qur’an, especially Surah Rahman. As Muslims, our belief is that the Qur’an is the Book of Allah, a source of barakah, blessings, and virtues. But beyond faith, one may ask: what is the healing and calming factor in listening to Surah Rahman?
When we listen attentively, it feels as if our inner chemistry aligns—our serotonin gets balanced and harmonized. The very name Ar-Rahman comes from rahm (the womb), reflecting extreme affection and mercy, so from the first verse, we feel embraced by divine compassion.
The Surah can be seen in three subject-wise parts. First, Allah reminds us of countless blessings, repeated with the beautiful verse “So which of the favors of your Lord will you deny?” This rhythm cultivates gratitude, and gratitude itself soothes the heart. The second part speaks of Allah’s eternal nature and the reality of the Day of Judgment, humbling us into surrender. Finally, the vivid descriptions of Paradise uplift the soul, drawing us away from worldly distractions and filling us with hope.
Surah Rahman is thus not only a reminder of faith but also a divine therapy—its recitation rhythmically heals, aligns emotions, and restores inner peace. Recent research studies have also highlighted the therapeutic benefits of listening to Surah Rahman in reducing stress, improving emotional well-being, and even aiding recovery from illness.
