Denial is an unconscious defense mechanism that makes us avoid the awareness of a painful reality to protect us. Our mind goes into denial when a situation or emotions become too overwhelming. We can go into denial with something as small as homework to as big as the death of a loved one. People can even go into denial when they are given feedback. They unconsciously refuse to believe that there is something that they need to improve. Sometimes when people are diagnosed with a deadly disease, they go into denial and refuse to take any treatment.
Although denial can temporarily protect us from distress, it also delays the actual solution of the problem, which can make the situation even worse. Having a clear understanding of denial helps us become aware of it when we are avoiding reality. It can also help us accept the situation earlier.
