One of the major element of legal proceeding requires the confession of guilt by the suspect. For a fair trial to proceed, it is important that the
suspect confesses his crime. Confession not only helps with the legal procedures to advance smoothly but is indeed a cathartic and healthy
process for the sinner. Gloomily there exist a realm, where the outcome of confession won't be any good but extreme pshychological pain.
This realm is none other than the 'Day of Resurrection'; when the sinners will be dragged in chains towards the hell fire and will be stopped and asked by the
gatekeepers of hell,“Did a warner not come to you?”(67:8)They will reply, “Yes, a warner did come to us, but we denied and said, ‘Allah has revealed nothing.
You are extremely astray.’”(67:9)
This conversation between the angel and sinner will end once the crime is admitted by the individual.
فَٱعْتَرَفُوا۟ بِذَنۢبِهِمْ فَسُحْقًۭا لِّأَصْحَـٰبِ ٱلسَّعِيرِ
And so they will confess their sins. So away with the residents of the Blaze!(67:11)
The arabic word سُحْقًۭا mentioned in Surah Mulk means 'far removed' or 'away with' the mercy of Allah. This means there confession will lead towards isolation.
This article will explain how a confession turns into a pshychological state of loneliness. Before we look into that, it is also important to understand how confession is healthy process under normal conditions.
Usually before the confession, sinner experiences a state of chronic stress. The cortisol level rises and flight-or-fight condition exist due to the burden of secret. But once the confession is made, it mimics as a pshychological "pressure valve." Studies reveals that the act of disclosing a secret leads to an immediate drop in heart rate and skin conductance. The mind and body feels relief.
Moreover the confession helps in the reduction cognitive load (working memory). Normally,to keep a secret, the individual have to continously check
their words, remember their lies, and evaluate them. All this requires significant cognitive resourses. But once the sin is accepted, the brain
enjoys the cognitive freedom, due to the freeing up of the mental energy which was previously fully occupied to safeguard the false truth.
Under the weight of secret, the roots of shame are nurtured. However, once the confession comes out, it gives individual the chance to externalize
the deed, allowing insight to the sinner to view the event from a third person prespective. Now the sinner is able to stand under the light of
accountability rather than the shame, a pro-social approach encouraging the person to fix things.
One of the major healthy effect of admitting the sin involves the restoration of social and moral identity.
The self worth is under the scrutiny the most when 'moral debt' crushes the sinner and urges the individual to hide from the society.Confession
helps out to pave the road between the private self(the sinner) and the public self(the citizen/believer). This restores the damaged identity and
the sinner feels the sense of belonging, previously lost under the blanket of shame.
We just looked at the ways confession is beneficial for the mind of sinner. Unfortunetly the sinner in hereafter will undergo intense pain once he admits his crime.
Studies reveal if a confession is made under harsh condition or hostility, the outcome is 'Shame hit'. In pshychological terms this is called 'Moral Injury',
a state of extreme distress followed by social islolation. The actual purpose behind a
confession is to move the brain from 'Amygdala'(fear center) to 'Prefrontal Cortex'(Reasoning and Moral center). Nevertheless 'Shame Hit' not just
keeps the amygdala activated for a long but makes it enter the state of Red alert. Under these extreme conditions; where a sinner is nor able to fight the
higher authority neither flee, the brain freezes and goes into utter dissociation.
Further the confession results in a complete shift of mindset from guilt("I have done something bad") to shame("I am bad"). This
thought results in the total collapse of Self System. Severe conditions strengthens the "Global Shame" narrative. The Medial Prefrontal Cortex(mPFC), responsible for self refrential thought, starts to hard-wire the identity of 'criminal' or 'sinner' as a permanent state. This halts
the brains ability to improve ones identity, instead the individual brains looks for ways to hide or disappear. Final blow to social identity is
delivered when Anterior Cingulate Cortex(ACC); a neural pathway for both social rejection and physical pain, is triggered beacause of the
harsh response to confession. the brain releases high levels of cortisol(stress) while inhibiting the secretion of oxytocin(connection).A state
of profound isolation is created which the brain interprets as social death.
Quran described this all with just one word سُحْقًۭا.The torment of transgressor will begin with this psychological pain of complete dissosiation and mental stress and what awaits in the
his final abode is even more worse.May Allah save us from the fire of Jahanum.(Ameen)
