Ceasefire: Signed, Sealed… and Ignored
An agreement between opposing sides in a conflict such as countries, armies, or groups to stop fighting temporarily or permanently is known as a ceasefire.
The immediate goal of a ceasefire is to stop violence but the underlying purposes of ceasefires vary. Ceasefires may be intended to meet short-term limited needs (such as providing humanitarian aid), manage a conflict to make it less devastating, or advance efforts to peacefully resolve a dispute.[1]
According to “Al-Jazeera” Based on reports regarding the October 10, 2025, US-brokered ceasefire in Gaza and subsequent, often short-lived truces, Israeli forces continued to kill Palestinians in the Gaza Strip and Lebanon through air strikes, drone attacks, and direct gunfire. According to the Gaza Government Media Office, there were over 2,400 ceasefire violations by Israel from October 10, 2025, to April 14, 2026, resulting in hundreds of fatalities.
On 18 March, Israel launched surprise airstrikes on Gaza, breaking the ceasefire with Hamas. Netanyahu's office stated that the strikes were carried out in response to Hamas's refusal to release hostages and its rejection of proposals to extend the cease-fire.
According to “Al-Jazeera”Israel violated the ceasefire agreement at least 2,400 times from October 10, 2025 to April 14, 2026, through the continuation of attacks by air, artillery and direct shootings, the Government Media Office in Gaza reports.
Gaza Strip
Following the declaration of a ceasefire on October 10, 2025, Israeli attacks continued, with at least 757 Palestinians killed and 2,111 injured between the start of that truce and mid-November 2025.
The Gaza Government Media Office reported over 2,400 ceasefire violations by Israel from October 10, 2025, to April 14, 2026, including aerial and artillery attacks.
Between February 28 and April 8, 2026, Israeli attacks killed at least 107 people in Gaza.
Lebanon
On April 9, 2026, amid a shaky U.S.-Iran brokered truce, Israel launched a wave of strikes in Lebanon that killed at least 254 people and injured 1,165, which was described as one of the deadliest days in the country.
As of April 14, 2026, Lebanese health authorities reported that 17 people were killed and others wounded in Israeli strikes across southern Lebanon, with the total killed since April 9 exceeding 182.
The events between October 2025 and April 2026 expose not only the fragility of ceasefire agreements but also the role of powerful actors in undermining them. Despite being presented as a guarantor of peace, the United States has been criticized for its continued political and military support of Israel, raising questions about its neutrality and commitment to enforcing ceasefire terms. The actions of Benjamin Netanyahu’s government, including repeated military operations during a declared truce, further highlight how ceasefires can be disregarded when strategic interests take precedence over humanitarian concerns.
In this context, ceasefires risk becoming tools of political convenience rather than genuine efforts toward peace. The repeated violations and continued violence suggest a pattern where agreements are used to manage international pressure rather than to end suffering on the ground. For many observers, this reflects a broader imbalance in accountability, where violations by stronger actors face limited consequences.
