Before 1982, Spain’s economy was at an all-time low due to various reasons including colonisation and wars. Within 10 years of joining NATO, its GDP more than doubled (World Bank Report, 2003). What do you think changed?
NATO provided a safety net to a previously war-torn country at the brink of economic breakdown. Safety from outside threats meant that the nation could focus on rebuilding itself from the ground up. Foreign investors felt safe in investing over there and tourism also flourished. It further led to Spain’s integration in the European Union.
How did this alliance affect the psychology of a common citizen? When an individual’s basic needs are secured and he feels a sense of safety and belonging, he becomes more confident and willing to take risks. This confidence fosters financial improvement and the upward movement of his socio-economic status (Maslow, 1943). Nations, like individuals, thrive when their foundations are secured.
The recent Pakistan–KSA military alliance could also be seen under this lens. Partnering with Pakistan strengthens Riyadh’s defense posture while giving Pakistan economic and diplomatic leverage. Collective defense would reduce individual military burdens, foster cooperation, and provide stability that encourages investment and growth. Economic stability enables governments to redirect resources toward education, research, and infrastructure. Universities can flourish, and a skilled workforce can drive innovation, creating a cycle where security, economic growth, and public confidence reinforce each other.
Stronger universities, better education, and intellectual growth would not only uplift society but also enhance the global standing of both nations.
If more countries decide to join this alliance, it could lead to a NATO-like community for the Islamic nation. Just as Spain’s integration into NATO transformed its economy and society, the Pakistan–Saudi alliance could spark similar change in the Islamic world. Alliances are not merely military pacts, they are catalysts for confidence, growth, and intellectual revival.
Just like a single individual cannot flourish independently, similarly, a nation’s development is also largely dependent on a community of nations, helping each other to thrive and grow. We can use this opportunity to restore the Islamic community to its former glory.
